Authors' objectives:
To evaluate the performance of a method of re-examining cervico-vaginal smears (CVS) using an automated examination system for Papnet(R) slides (NDS Inc.).
Authors' recommendations:
NB The following recommendation was developed exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer of the AP-HP, the public hospital network of Paris area, for his use as an aid in the decision making process. In any other context, it should be considered nothing more than an element of information.
The CEDIT considers that on the basis of the results of this study, the Papnet(R)-assisted re-examination is not more efficient than manual re-examination in detecting pre-cancerous lesions, even though it costs six times as much. It does not therefore recommend that it should be used by the pathology departments of the AP-HP in this indication.
The CEDIT also recommends that in these departments, efforts to set up quality assurance systems for cervico-vaginal smear examinations should be continued.
