Authors' objectives:

To assess the role of new coronary angioplasty techniques versus balloon percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, at the request of the Caisse Nationale d'Assurance Maladie des Travailleurs SalariEs (Salaried Workers Health Insurance Fund).

Authors' results and conclusions: Stents can be routinely used in cases of severe occlusive dissection during balloon angioplasty and to treat stenosis of a saphenous vein graft, and for certain types of de novo lesions. Safety and efficacy of atherectomy are controversial. More data and longer follow up are needed. Laser and therapeutic ultrasound techniques are still experimental. No advantage has been demonstrated for ROTACS.
Authors' recommendations: These new techniques must be evaluated according to clearly defined procedures and their modalities of availability must be defined conjointly by health professionals, ministries, health insurance funds and manufacturers. Regular updates are needed due to the rapid development of these techniques.
Authors' methods: Systematic review
