Authors' objectives:

The general objective of this paper is to describe the indications of the quick HIV detection test. Its specific objectives are: 1) To describe prior experiences in the use of the quick detection test; 2) To assess the applicability of the quick HIV detection test in our context.

Authors' recommendations: No clinical practice guidelines or recommendations on the use of quick detection tests of HIV infections of good methodological quality were found. The results of this review suggest that the HIV quick detection test could be useful in direct access programs in populations with HIV infection risk that are not regular users of conventional medical care. In health care centres and hospitals its use should be assessed according to the features of the population taken care of, and the urgency in obtaining the serological results using conventional tests.Currently, the HIV quick detection test is being applied in specific programs.
