Authors' objectives:

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of heparin therapy of recurrent spontaneous abortion related to antiphospholipid syndrome.

Authors' results and conclusions: Those patients having undergone three consecutive spontaneous abortions before the 20th week of gestation and meeting the criteria for antiphospholipid syndrome (high or intermediate titers of anticardiolipin antibodies or lupus anticoagulant in at least two tests taken with an interval not shorter than 6 weeks apart) would benefit from the aspirin combined therapy from the moment the pregnancy is diagnosed (80 mg day) and the addition of subcutaneous calcium heparin 5000 U every 12 hours from week 8, both until week 34.
Authors' recommendations: In this group of patients, the risk of having a spontaneous abortion without therapy is approximately 90%. This risk can be reduced to 50% with the use of aspirin + heparin. Also, tests have been carried out with low-molecular-weight heparin, 5000 U/day instead of calcium heparin.
