Authors' objectives:

This study aims to provide an overview of the diagnostic effectiveness and indications of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA).

Authors' results and conclusions: MRA can be considered appropriate mainly if it can replace a more invasive procedure (such as contrast angiography), reducing the risk for patients or if it provides more information than other diagnostic methods.
Authors' recommendations: MRA is a technology that is constantly developing. However, its safety and effectiveness has not yet been established for all anatomic regions. On the other hand, although its sensitivity and specificity were very high in a number of studies (e.g: selection of patients who are in a therapeutic threshold for carotid endarterectomy, or with intracranial aneurysm), the clinical impact and the results of decisions taken based on these images has not yet been clearly defined.
