Authors' objectives:

The aim of this review was to assess the efficacy/effectiveness and safety of the oxygen-ozone therapy technique in the treatment of herniated ('slipped') disc.

Authors' results and conclusions: The studies retrieved in the search of the scientific literature lacked rigour. Many were congress communications of very low methodological quality. The results of such studies indicate that use of oxygen-ozone therapy yields good results in the treatment of herniated disc and, moreover, that the technique is safe and leads to no side effects which can be regarded as serious.
Authors' recommendations: There is no agreement on a standard protocol governing the site of administration of the therapy, the dose to be applied and the number of sessions required. Neither is there any agreement on inclusion/exclusion criteria for selecting patients to undergo such therapy. Due to the poor quality of the studies conducted to ascertain the efficacy/effectiveness of oxygen-ozone therapy, this technique cannot be said to be effective in the treatment of herniated disc until it has been further tested by rigorous studies with long-term follow-up. Insofar as safety is concerned, oxygen-ozone therapy appears to be a safe technique, though the specified contraindications must be taken into account.
