Authors' objectives:

The aim of this study is to review the available information on the use of the Merci Retriever/Merci Retrieval System device (manufactured by Concentric Medical, Inc., Mountain View CA) to remove blood clots from the brain.

Authors' recommendations: The Merci Retrieval System is another step in the development of new approaches for treating ischemic stroke. It provides an addition option when thrombolysis has failed or is inappropriate. Use of the device requires a high skill level. Data on the effectiveness of the device are limited; it is expected that the results of ongoing trials will provide further information.
