This study aims to assess the current evidence on auditory brain stem implants.

Authors' recommendations: Current evidence on the safety and efficacy of auditory brain stem implants appears adequate to support the use of this procedure by surgical teams experienced in this technique, provided that normal arrangements are in place for consent, audit and clinical governance.
