Authors' objectives:

To summarize the available information on the use of BST-CarGel (TM), manufactured by BioSyntech Inc. of Laval, Quebec, to regenerate articular cartilage (e.g. in the knee) and repair damage caused by osteoarthritis and sports injuries.

Authors' recommendations: There is no safety or efficacy evidence from controlled trials of BST-CarGel (TM) for cartilage repair in humans. This technology may be best suited to younger candidates for total knee replacement who would likely need a subsequent knee replacement in 10 to 15 years.
