Authors' objectives:

The objectives of this work were:

1. To establish the diffusion and distribution of bone densitometry (BD) by health care sector (public and private) according to its geographical distribution by health care regions, as well as its level of utilisation.

2. To describe the utilisation patterns of BD in routine clinical practice in Catalonia

Authors' recommendations: The use of BD in Catalonia has experienced an important increase in recent years, especially dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The number of equipments tripled between 1990 and 1997, and the level of examinations is five-fold larger. The diffusion pattern of BD in Catalonia differs between the public and the private health care sectors, both in terms of time of introduction, and number and type of installed equipments. Differences were also found in the geographical distribution of BD in Catalonia as a whole. Most densitometers are located in private extra-hospital centres, and those found in the public sector are located in hospital centres, with a great concentration in the Barcelona City health care region.
