Authors' objectives:

The goal of full-field digital mammography (FFDM), an alternative to conventional screen-film mammography (SFM), is to detect and diagnose breast cancers at an earlier stage when treatment is more likely to be effective. Using x-rays, FFDM acquires breast images as electronic signals that are stored as digital pictures for viewing on a computer monitor or for printing. In contrast to SFM, the radiologist can manipulate the magnification, contrast, and brightness of digital mammograms in order to facilitate image interpretation.
