Deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease and essential tremor

Authors' objectives:

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves constant, high-frequency electrical stimulation of specific sites in the brain with implanted electrodes as a means to reduce the symptoms of movement disorders such as essential tremor and Parkinsons disease. Unlike pallidotomy and thalamotomy, deep brain stimulation does not require creation of a permanent lesion in the brain, thereby allowing the procedure to be reversed if it does not provide adequate relief of symptoms.
