Authors' objectives:

Chelation therapy utilizes compounds that bind with heavy metal ions to reduce the accumulation and enhance the urinary and fecal excretion of these metals. Chelation therapy has been used to treat heavy metal overload, such as iron overload and lead poisoning, but has also been investigated as a treatment for a variety of non-overload conditions, such as atherosclerosis, anthracycline-associated heart damage, Alzheimer's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
