Authors' objectives:

To assess the potential for future impact of insertable loop recorders for the diagnosis of syncope.

Authors' recommendations: The Reveal Plus Implantable Loop Recorder (ILR) is an implanted diagnostic device designed to provide a minimum of 14 months of monitoring and storage of ECG information recorded during symptomatic and asymptomatic episodes, including tachycardia and bradycardia. ILRs are indicated for the diagnosis of underlying cardiac causes of syncope in patients at increased risk of arrhythmias, and patients who experience transient symptoms that may suggest a cardiac arrhythmia. Research evidence from 2 randomised trials has demonstrated statistically significant higher rates of diagnosis with ILRs compared to conventional testing. ILRs may be indicated in the investigation of epilepsy.
