Authors' objectives:

The purpose of this report is to ensure that the HTA idea will be implemented at various levels at Aarhus Kommunehospital (Aarhus District General Hospital) and used as a general method to ensure overall orientated and interdisciplinary decisions in the normal run of things.

Authors' results and conclusions: 58% of all departments have received an introduction to health technology assessment. Among the different staff categories approximately half of the leading staff participated. The hospital management employ the HTA concept to a great extent, and it is also used as a working method by the administration, but not consistently. In the clinical departments the idea is used to a certain extent. A quarter of the clinical departments have taken initiative to carry out a concrete health technology assessment and to a lesser extent taken initiatives when it concerns HTA in collaboration with external collaboration partners. The interdisciplinary clinical service departments refused the training offer.
Authors' recommendations: The HTA concept has to a certain extent been implemented at various levels in Aarhus Kommunehospital, but is not yet fully implemented. Other hospitals are recommended to introduce HTA the same way that it has been done in this current project, with a central consultant function and department-specific introduction courses. Furthermore, it is advisable that hospital management takes an active and supporting part in relation to the implementation of HTA.
