Authors' objectives:
Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is a treatment option that allows patients to receive IV antimicrobials outside of the hospital setting. It is offered to patients who are well enough to leave the hospital but still require antimicrobial therapy. There are 3 main delivery models of OPAT — infusion centres, skilled nursing facilities, and home-based administration. OPAT has the potential to improve patient flow, patient experience, and decrease health system costs. A review of the clinical effectiveness and safety, cost-effectiveness as well as evidence-based guidelines could help clarify its role across different patient populations and care settings. The objectives of the review are to summarize the evidence regarding clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different delivery models of OPAT and to report on the recommendations found in evidence-based guidelines.
