Authors' objectives:
Transarterial periarticular embolisation (TAPE) is a minimally invasive, catheter-based interventional procedure for local pain management in patients with osteoarthritis.
Authors' results and conclusions:
Three randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were available for the assessment of TAPE in knee osteoarthritis. The current evidence base is insufficient to determine the efficacy and safety of TAPE versus standard or sham treatment in routine practice. One study showed a short-term significant reduction in pain after one month. No studies were identified that assessed TAPE for shoulder osteoarthritis.
Authors' recommendations:
The methodological quality of the evidence is predominantly high; however, further RCTs with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up are needed.
