Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is intended for the radiological and pathological diagnosis of pancreatobiliary disease and as a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery for the treatment of gallstone disease, pancreatitis, biliary obstructions, pancreatobiliary cancers, and unexplained abdominal pain related to sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD). ERCP involves the insertion of a thin catheter under endoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance through the mouth, stomach, and duodenum and into the opening of the bile and pancreatic ducts.
