Electrical bioimpedance involves the measurement of cardiac output by detecting changes in electrical impedance as blood is pumped into the aorta. The goal of this procedure is to provide a noninvasive means to measure cardiac output, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease, severe trauma, hypothermia, or multiple organ system failure, and during the perioperative period in patients who have a high risk of morbidity and mortality.
