Authors' objectives:

Lumbar discography is performed in patients with chronic low back pain that is unresponsive to conservative approaches and for which other imaging techniques have provided insufficient diagnostic information and surgical intervention is being considered. It involves fluoroscopically guided injection of a contrast agent into the nucleus of one or more lumbar discs individually to provoke a pain response that reproduces the patient's usual pain and to reveal disc abnormalities via the pattern of contrast dye viewed with computed tomography (CT). The purpose of discography is to determine whether any disc tested is the source of the patients usual pain and whether the patient may benefit from surgical intervention.
