Authors' objectives:
Deep brain stimulation, the chronic high-frequency electrical stimulation of electrodes implanted within the brain, has been developed as a reversible nonlesioning alternative to pallidotomy and thalamotomy for patients with dystonia. It is postulated that electrical stimulation can inactivate brain regions believed to be responsible for the motor difficulties associated with dystonia.
