Authors' objectives: COVID-19 is caused by the virus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a virus that infects the lungs and upper airways. In healthy individuals, infection with SARS-CoV-2 can usually be managed without needing to see a doctor. However, COVID-19 can cause more severe infections in some people which may lead to them being hospitalised or dying. Groups vulnerable to serious complications include older adults, those with underlying medical conditions and those living with immunocompromise. The Department of Health requested that HIQA complete a health technology assessment (HTA) of various COVID-19 vaccination strategies to inform a decision on COVID-19 vaccination policy in Ireland. This protocol presents the methods for estimating the burden of disease associated with COVID-19 in Ireland, and assessing the economic implications associated with various COVID-19 vaccination strategies in Ireland.
