Authors' objectives:

Chemoembolization involves injection of chemotherapeutic drugs directly into the arteries supplying a tumor, followed by injection of embolizing agents. The goal of intra-arterial injection of chemotherapeutic drugs is to achieve high local concentration with minimal systemic side effects, while intra-arterial embolization is designed to produce ischemic necrosis of the tumor by depriving it of nutrients and oxygen. Chemoembolization is intended as a palliative treatment for patients with unresectable primary liver cancer and as a neoadjuvant, preoperative treatment for patients with resectable disease.
