Authors' objectives:

The major goals of breast ductal lavage, a method of collecting epithelial cells from individual breast ducts for cytological examination, are to detect breast cancer at an early stage before it is detectable by mammography or clinical breast examination (CBE) and to detect precancerous cells originating within the breast ducts of women at high risk for the disease. The early detection of breast cancers and precancerous lesions has the potential to allow for more timely decision-making regarding further diagnostic testing, monitoring, prevention, and treatment.
