Botulinum toxin treatment for headache

Authors' objectives:
Botulinum toxin (BTX) is used as a prophylactic or acute treatment for chronic or recurrent headache. The theoretical basis for use of this neurotoxin is that certain types of headache, such as migraine, tension-type, and cervicogenic, may be triggered by abnormal tone in pericranial or cervical muscles. Injection of BTX into these muscles would inhibit their contraction and might thereby decrease the frequency and/or severity of the headache episodes.
