Original Title:
Diagnóstico de la enfermedad de hígado graso no alcohólico
Authors' objectives:
To analyse the safety, sensitivity, and specificity as well as economic, ethical, legal, and organisational considerations regarding the use and utility of OWLiver technology in individuals with suspected non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that may progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
Authors' results and conclusions:
Given the lack of consistency and limitations of the studies found in the literature search, and despite the good general results in terms of safety, the findings must be interpreted with caution. In particular, the studies retrieved are low-to-medium quality and have potential sources of biases that could restrict their validity.
Conclusions
The OWLiver test can be used for monitoring and prognosis in patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.
With the goal of avoiding unnecessary biopsies in patients with known NFLD and suspected NASH, the use of the combination of OWLiver results and other parameters for detecting progression to NASH should be explored with caution.
Authors' methods:
A structured literature search was conducted in general databases (Medline [PubMed]) and Embase [OvidWeb]), and multidisciplinary databases (Web of Science and Scopus) to identify studies providing evidence concerning OWLiver® for the diagnosis of NAFLD.
