Original Title:
Utilisation judicieuse des analyses biomédicales ‒ Dosage de la vitamine D 25-OH
Authors' objectives:
The testing of 25-OH vitamin D raises several issues concerning its relevance, and its
use in a prevention framework is widely questioned, notably due to the lack of data
supporting its clinical utility. In Québec and several other jurisdictions, an increase in the
number of these tests has been observed in recent years. The objective of this work is to
develop a guidance sheet to support appropriate use, in order to reduce the volume of
procedures with low added value within Québec’s healthcare system.
Authors' results and conclusions:
RESULTS (#1 25-OH VITAMIN D TESTING IS NOT INDICATED IN) : • children (including infants), adolescents, and adults (including pregnant women
and the elderly) who are asymptomatic and without risk factors or only at low to
moderate risk of vitamin D deficiency. (#2 25-OH VITAMIN D TESTING MAY BE INDICATED IN) : in persons at high risk of vitamin D deficiency;
• when initiating a specific treatment in persons with osteoporosis, osteomalacia, or
rickets, after adequate supplementation lasting for 3 to 4 months. CONCLUSION : The guidance sheet that was developed aims to engage, guide, and support healthcare
professionals in promoting the appropriate use of 25-OH vitamin D testing. It may thus
contribute to reduce the annual number of test requests and associated costs and
workload, while also generating a positive environmental impact.
Authors' methods:
A literature review of the indications and recommendations related to 25-OH vitamin D
testing was conducted using INESSS’s rapid review methodology. Healthcare
professionals provided experiential and contextual knowledge specific to Québec.
