Original Title: Utilisation judicieuse des analyses biomédicales ‒ Temps de saignement (in vivo)
Authors' objectives: The in vivo bleeding time is an imprecise test considered to be outdated, and that exposes patients to potential complications. Although its use has decreased in recent years, the in vivo bleeding time test is still performed in Québec. The objective of this work is to develop a guidance sheet to support appropriate use, in order to reduce the volume of procedures with low added value within Québec’s healthcare system.
Authors' results and conclusions: RESULTS : The in vivo bleeding time test is not indicated in any clinical situation. There are no indications for the use of the in vivo bleeding time, and this test should no longer be prescribed in routine medical practice. Other tests that perform better and that are more precise are available. CONCLUSION : The guidance sheet that was developed aims to mobilize, guide, and equip healthcare professionals to encourage more appropriate use of the in vivo bleeding time. It may thus contribute to reduce the number of annual test requests and associated costs and workload, while also generating a positive environmental impact.
Authors' methods: A review of the literature on indications and recommendations regarding the in vivo bleeding time test was conducted using INESSS’s rapid review methodology. Healthcare professionals provided experiential and contextual knowledge specific to Québec.
