Cryotherapy in treating meniscal tears

Authors' objectives: To determine whether there is any evidence to support the efficacy/effectiveness of cryotherapy in treating (pain) patients with a meniscal tear.
Authors' results and conclusions: Eleven published studies were identified from the literature searches. Upon examination of the titles and abstracts of these 11 studies, two studies were thought to be relevant and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. No further studies were identified from the manual search. An expert review (level of evidence 5) and a high quality systematic review (level of evidence 1) were retrieved in full did not provide any data or evidence on the efficacy/effectiveness of cryotherapy to treat pain nor its role in treating meniscal tears. At present, there is no data to support the efficacy/effectiveness of cryotherapy to treat meniscal tear.
Authors' methods: A comprehensive and systematic literature search was done on June 11, 2025. A broad based search was done on commercial medical literature databases employing combination of keywords. No limitation, such as on the language or year of publication, was implemented in this search. A manual search was also done on the references of the articles that were retrieved in full.
