Original Title: Clinique de suivi des nodules pulmonaires découverts fortuitement : rapport d'étape sur le choix des indicateurs d'efficacité et de sécurité
Authors' objectives: Up to 11.5% of incidentally discovered pulmonary nodules (IPN) may prove to be neoplastic, yet appropriate radiological follow-up is currently performed in only about 29% of cases at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute – Laval University (Institute), which conducts 12,000 thoracic CT scans annually. To structure patient management, the Institute established a follow-up clinic for IPN led by a clinical nurse. This report (Part 1 of a two-part project) aimed to identify indicators for evaluating the impact of this clinic on the quality, efficacy, and safety of patient care.
Authors' results and conclusions: The indicators identified cover patient characteristics, time to care, adherence to recommendations, nodule characteristics, diagnostic follow-up, and safety indicators (adverse events, mortality). These indicators will serve as the basis for Part 2 of the project, which will measure the clinic's actual impact on lung cancer diagnosis and stage.
Authors' methods: A literature review conducted in Medline and Embase identified 1,056 documents, of which 58 were retained after eligibility assessment. Twelve non-randomized observational studies (8 retrospective, 3 prospective) and one targeted review, conducted between 2009 and 2024 (primarily in the United States), were included.
