Causal association of being a retired firefighter and the development of coronary artery diseases (CAD)

Authors' objectives:
To determine whether there is any evidence to support the (causal) association of being a retired firefighter and the development of coronary artery diseases (CAD).
Authors' results and conclusions:
Nine published studies were identified. Upon examination on the titles and abstracts of the nine studies identified, two studies were thought to be relevant and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. Four more studies were included as the result of manual searches. Hence, there were six published studies retrieved in full for further appraisal in this systematic review. None of the six studies that were retrieved in full provided any data showing that retired firefighters had higher risk or incidence of developing CAD (compared to other occupation or active/on duty firefighters) nor there is any published study providing evidence that being a retired firefighter was a risk factor of developing CAD. Summary. At present, there is no published study to support the (causal) association of being retired firefighter and the development of CAD.
Authors' methods:
A comprehensive and systematic literature search was conducted on August 22, 2024. The search was done on commercial medical literature databases as well as on NIOSHTIC-2 database. No limitation, such as on the language or date of publication, was implemented in any of these searches. A manual search, on the references of the articles that were retrieved in full as well as on the Evidence-Based Practice Group reference collection on firefighters articles, were also done.
