Authors' objectives:
To determine whether there is any evidence to support the (causal) association between post-concussion syndrome and the development of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
Authors' results and conclusions:
Thirty-six published study was identified from the literature search. Upon examining the titles and abstracts of these 36 studies, three studies were thought to be relevant and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. No further relevant study was identified from the manual search. Of the three studies that were retrieved in full, none were relevant or provided any data relevant to the objective of this systematic review. At present, there is no published data supporting potential (causal) association of the development of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) among patient with concussion, post-concussion syndrome or mild traumatic brain injury.
Authors' methods:
A comprehensive and systematic literature search was conducted on July 23, 2024. The search was done on commercial medical literature databases. A combination of keywords was employed in this search. No limitation, such as on the language or date of publication was implemented in this search. A Manual search on the references of the article that was retrieved in full, was also conducted.
