Original Title: Meilleures interventions de groupe destinées aux personnes auteures de violence conjugale
Authors' objectives: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is characterized by acts of aggression, abuse or domination committed in the context of an intimate relationship, whether marital, extramarital, romantic, long-term or one-off. In Québec, IPV is unacceptable and is not tolerated, whatever form it may be. In the past few decades, the Québec government has stepped up its efforts to combat intimate partner violence. It is against this backdrop that the Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux (INESSS) has, at the request of the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS), carried out work to answer the following decisional question: Which effective group interventions for IPV perpetrators should be used in Québec?
Authors' results and conclusions: RESULTS: The consolidation of the data from the systematic review of the scientific and grey literature and data gathered from the consultations with different stakeholders led to a number of findings concerning: • The efficacy of group interventions in reducing violent behaviours in intimate partner violence perpetrators; • The acceptability and applicability of the group interventions identified; • Certain general considerations regarding group interventions; • Facilitating factors and barriers to the use of group interventions considered to be effective. CONCLUSION: The results of this report are consistent with international practice standards regarding the approaches to be used, which mainly recommend interventions based second-wave cognitive-behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing techniques. Furthermore, the recommendations provided enable group facilitators in Québec community organizations to exercise flexibility in their interventions, while at the same time ensuring that they use the best practices.
Authors' recommendations: RECOMMENDATION 1: Group interventions for IPV perpetrators should be based on second-wave cognitivebehavioural therapy and motivational interviewing techniques. If necessary, group interventions based on third-wave cognitive-behavioural therapy could be used. In order for group facilitators to be able to provide these interventions, they must: • Be appropriately trained; • Receive clinical supervision in their practice. RECOMMENDATION 2: Group interventions for IPV perpetrators may be provided as follows: • Be co-led by a dyad, ideally male/female • When possible, create groups with participants with complementary characteristics (e.g., the level of involvement, the progress made, and their clinical profile) in order to foster their engagement and involvement. Group interventions for IPV perpetrators should be preceded by a rigorous intake/assessment/orientation process carried out in one or more individual sessions, as needed.
Authors' methods: This report is based on the consolidation of data from a systematic review of the scientific and grey literature and data gathered from consultations with different stakeholders. The literature data were taken from 36 quantitative experimental or quasi-experimental studies. The analysis of these data led to the formulation of 15 statements of scientific evidence concerning the effectiveness of the interventions evaluated with regard to violent behaviours. The consultations were conducted with those most directly involved in group interventions for IPV perpetrators: workers in community organizations that provide VI such interventions, former participants in such interventions, and victims of IPV whose partner has participated in this type of group intervention.
