Authors' objectives:

This report aims to compare use of cataract surgery in Saskatchewan with rates in other provinces and to examine rates within the province over time. It also reviews patterns of cataract surgery among ophthalmologists in the province in order to gain a better understanding of the accessibility to and distribution of cataract surgery in Saskatchewan.

Authors' recommendations: The authors found that Saskatchewan has the second highest rate of cataract surgery in Canada. Residents in most parts of the province have good access to the procedure. There is significant variation, however, in surgery rates among different regions and in the number of procedures performed by individual doctors. Our findings suggest accessibility to cataract surgery is generally not a problem in Saskatchewan.
