Authors' objectives:

To summarize the available information on the use of the Independence(TM) iBOT(TM) 3000, a wheelchair that may be used to climb stairs, elevate the user to standing adult eye level, and cross uneven terrain.

Authors' recommendations: This device may offer greater mobility and freedom to users than conventional wheelchairs. However, safety and effectiveness data are limited; additional community-based trials are needed. The iBOT may be difficult to manoeuvre indoors due to the seat height, but it operates well outdoors. Trials in Canadian winter weather conditions must be conducted. High cost of ownership, training-related costs, and potential benefits to users require consideration.
