Authors' objectives: To determine whether there is any evidence to support the efficacy and/or effectiveness of noise-cancelling headphones as treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or panic attacks.
Authors' results and conclusions: Ninety-nine published studies were identified through the search. After duplicates were removed, 79 published studies were identified through the search. Upon examination of the titles and abstracts of these published studies, there were no studies thought to be relevant to use of noise-cancelling headphones in treating PTSD and/or panic attacks. Seven hundred seventy-six published studies were identified through the expanded search. After duplicates were removed, 581 published studies were identified through the search. Upon examination of the titles and abstracts of these published studies, there were three studies thought to be relevant to use of noise-cancelling headphones in treating PTSD and/or panic attacks, 161 were excluded due to incorrect population, 198 due to incorrect interventions, 26 due to incorrect outcomes, 172 due to incorrect study design, and one was an animal/cell culture study. Of the three studies that were retrieved in full, one was excluded due to incorrect outcomes, one was excluded due to incorrect study design, and one was an ongoing trial. In the original 2018 paper, there were no published studies showing the efficacy and/or effectiveness of noise-cancelling headphones in treating PTSD or panic attacks. In this 2024 update, there were no published studies and one ongoing trial that examines the efficacy and/or effectiveness of noise-cancelling headphones in treating anxiety disorders.
Authors' methods: In 2018, the WorkSafeBC Evidence-based Practice Group (EBPG) commissioned a systematic review to investigate the efficacy or effectiveness of using noise-cancelling headphones as treatment for patients diagnosed with for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or panic attacks. The findings concluded that there were no published studies showing the efficacy and/or effectiveness of noise-cancelling headphones in treating PTSD or panic attacks. The current update seeks to review the literature from the last update in 2018 in order to determine the efficacy of noise-cancelling headphones in treating PTSD and/or panic attacks. A systematic literature search was started on June 21, 2024. This literature search was conducted on commercial medical literature databases. The search was done by employing combinations of keywords. No other limitations on were implemented in any of these searches. A manual search was also planned and conducted on the references of the articles that were retrieved in full.
