Authors' objectives:

This report aims to examine the usefulness and efficacy of neutron irradiation, or neutron therapy, in the treatment of salivary gland cancer.

Authors' recommendations: According to AETMIS' assessment, the efficacy of neutron therapy is well established in the treatment of inoperable or unresectable salivary gland tumors, regardless of their degree of malignancy or stage of progression, and in cases of large-volume residual diseases after surgical resection. Neutron therapy can, among other things, be used alone to treat unresectable cystic adenoid carcinoma of the salivary glands. Although the results of its use for other types of tumors are promising, further research is necessary. Even if some Qubec patients had access to this treatment outside the province one should continue to monitor the evolution of radiation therapy technologies and strategies, which is toward both greater precision and the minimization of adverse effects.
