Authors' objectives: The purpose of this report is to identify and categorize published articles that could be helpful in planning local medical response in host cities.
Authors' results and conclusions: ▪ Mass gathering events such as the soccer World Cup, music festivals, and religious pilgrimages attract thousands of visitors to host cities. ▪ The European CDC has published useful guidance for public health authorities in cities hosting mass gatherings. ▪ Guidance from the US CDC and from the World Health Organization is less relevant to the topics addressed in this report. ▪ There is a wide variety of literature on public health response for mass gatherings, including systematic reviews, other reviews summarizing the literature, and after-action reports from officials who have managed public health services during mass gatherings. We have cross-tabulated a selection of this literature by type of reference, type of gathering, and hazard or hazards discussed. An online database with full text of most of these references is available to UPHS personnel. ▪ The HHS TRACIE site includes manuals and checklists that may be helpful for event planners.
