Authors' objectives:

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of music therapy for children with autistic spectrum disorder.

Authors' recommendations: We found insufficient evidence regarding the effects of music therapy on behaviour in children with autistic spectrum disorder. Children with autism may demonstrate slight improvements in speech and imitation during music therapy sessions, but the clinical importance of these changes may be negligible, and the impact on behaviour or social interaction outside the sessions is unclear, as are any long-term effects. Music therapy has not been clearly shown to be better than other behavioural therapies.
