Original Title: Desarrollo y Evaluación de una Herramienta de Ayuda para la Toma de Decisiones para pacientes con Hiperplasia Benigna de Próstata
Authors' objectives: • To adapt to the Spanish context a DA, in written format (booklet), for patients with BPH. • To assess the acceptability of the adapted DA by patients with BPH.
Authors' results and conclusions: RESULTS: Outcomes informed by patients on the acceptability of the DA-BPH adapted to our Spanish context, obtained through the questionnaires and focus group, reported that this tool is useful and it explains the information clearly. After reading the booklet patients increased their level of knowledge about BPH and its treatments, and they dropped their initial ignorance or uncertainty on important issues of the pathology, and treatments’ benefits or side effects. Thus, patients will recommend the DA-BPH to other men with this condition as they felt better informed and equipped to talk to their doctors and expose doubts, expressing their interest to have more information about their health condition and possible available treatments. However, patients show doubts and an increased level of conflict when they are asked about who has to take the decision about which treatment to follow. CONCLUSIONS: Patients defended two positions with relation to the participation in the shared decision making process. One was an active position and the other was passive as even when they would like to participate in the shared decision making process, they showed some reluctance when they have to make a decision together with its doctor or specialist, considering the doctor as the “expert” person to have the last word. However, the DA-HBP was well accepted by patients, who recommended its use as a textbook at home and in medical consultations to promote the shared decision-making model among patients and health professionals.
