Original Title: Coste-efectividad de intervenciones para prevenir y corregir la obesidad infantil
Authors' objectives: To determine the minimum effectiveness and maximum cost levels required for a public health intervention to prevent and correct childhood obesity to be cost-effective in the long-term.
Authors' results and conclusions: RESULTS: At a willingness-to-pay threshold of € 30,000 per QALY, any intervention costing less than € 2 child/year and reducing the prevalence of obesity by at least 1% would be cost-effective. In this case, the probability that the intervention was cost-effective is over 90%. CONCLUSIONS: Public health intervention that are likely to be cost-effective in the long term are those with a relative low-cost (maximum of € 5 child/year) and leading to a 2% improvement in obesity prevalence.
Authors' methods: An economic evaluation was performed by means of a Markov model with two symmetric arms: the first represents the health state evolution of children who are subjected to a public health intervention to prevent/correct obesity; whereas the second one is not involved in any intervention. A NHS perspective was used and a lifetime horizon was considered. The model structure includes five diseases selected due to their strong association with obesity and their high mortality rates: diabetes mellitus type 2, coronary stenosis, breast cancer, colon cancer and stroke.
