Authors' objectives:

This study aims to assess the effects of two or more attempts at in vitro fertilization (IVF) compared with one attempt.

Authors' recommendations: We found fairly reliable evidence from a study in the early 1990s that, without micromanipulation, live birth rates decrease with successive IVF attempts from about 14% at the first attempt, about 13% on the second attempt, about 11% on the third and fourth attempts and about 9% on the fifth attempt. These results should be interpreted with caution because couples who return for successive IVF attempts may be more likely to achieve live birth than couples who do not for other reasons, especially age, or because treatment received in subsequent cycles differs. IVF success rates may have improved since this study.
