Authors' objectives:

This study aims to assess the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for treating or preventing osteoradionecrosis, in people who have previously received radiotherapy.

Authors' recommendations: The first RCT, examining effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for established mandibular osteoradionecrosis, is likely to lack reliability. The second RCT provided limited evidence that hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help to prevent mandibular osteoradionecrosis compared with penicillin in people undergoing tooth extractions, who had previously received oral radiotherapy. However, this conclusion remains tentative in the absence of further trials. Neither trial reported on harms of treatment and we found no trials of therapy in osteoradionecrosis of other parts of the body.
