Authors' objectives:

This study aims to assess the effects of inpatient rehabilitation among people with relapsed alcohol addiction following one or more previous episodes of inpatient rehabilitation.

Authors' recommendations: We found no evidence on the effectiveness of repeat inpatient rehabilitation for alcoholics who have relapsed. Inpatient rehabilitation regimens vary widely among centres. The setting of rehabilitation may be a weaker determinant of effectiveness than the treatment regimens employed, which may vary widely among centres. Future studies that examine effectiveness of inpatient rehabilitation must account for this heterogeneity. For the same reasons, future research may not be applicable to practice unless the details of the interventions involved are made clear.
