Authors' objectives:

To summarize the available evidence on the use of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) for localized prostate carcinoma with no evidence of metastatic disease.

Authors' recommendations: Since 1998, LRP has been accepted as an alternative to conventional open surgery. Its advantages include less intraoperative blood loss, less morbidity involving the abdominal wall, quicker convalescence, and better cosmetic results. Its disadvantages include longer operative time and higher technical demands. The outcomes correlate to the operator's experience. Therefore, even if the evidence suggests that LRP performed by experienced surgeons is at least as good as conventional open surgery, it will be difficult for this technique to become popular.
