Authors' objectives:

To provide information on the diffusion and implementation processes of medical devices in Swedish healthcare and to identify determinants for appropriate diffusion and implementation. The report is a background report to planned case studies

Authors' results and conclusions: A general overview of actors, and facilitating and hindrance factors was provided. A comparison between diffusion processes for drugs and devices respectively was made. Based on this an innovation model was proposed, and possible areas for optimization discussed.
Authors' recommendations: The study of innovation and implementation is important in understanding the ways various actors facilitate or set up barriers for effective implementation. Local studies in the actual healthcare systems are needed. Several areas for optimization were proposed.
