Authors' objectives:

Auditory integration training (AIT) is a therapeutic listening procedure which is reported to alleviate or improve behaviour, attention, and communication deficits associated with various developmental disorders including autism and pervasive developmental disorders. The authors examine whether it is in fact helpful to people with autism.

Authors' results and conclusions: In the most reliable of the trials, patients' scores on all questionnaires improved significantly 1 month after both AIT and placebo and were maintained for 12 months in both groups (no significant difference between placebo and treatment groups). The authors conclude that some aspect of both auditory training and structured listening (placebo) led to the significant improvements.
Authors' recommendations: In view of the way that trials have produced conflicting results, and it remains uncertain whether AIT is any more beneficial than a placebo treatment, the authors take the view that AIT has not been proved effective. Clearer definition of the groups that may benefit and demonstration of effectiveness over placebo are required.
