Authors' objectives:
To consider the application to CEDIT from an orthopaedic surgeon at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital for a computerised stereotaxic visual assistance system for use in carrying out image guided surgery. It is intended to facilitate vertebral surgical procedures, particularly the implantation of intrapedicular screws.
Authors' recommendations:
CEDIT concludes that the technological innovation involved in stereotaxic visual assistance in surgery offers something of value and appears to be destined for considerable development. Data from the studies already available on this innovation are encouraging, but do not definitely demonstrate its reliability and safety.
