Authors' objectives:

To outline the effectiveness of the various forms of surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity and to estimate the cost-benefit of surgical interventions.

Authors' results and conclusions: The report evaluates the effectiveness of surgical treatment, particularly in terms of reducing the weight of severely obese individuals, and in maintaining this weight loss. Particular attention is paid to the complications associated with surgery. The effects examined also include the elimination and reduction of obesity-related illnesses and the improvement of the quality of life of the individuals concerned.
Authors' recommendations: Surgery for morbid obesity may often be the only treatment which can lead to a substantial, maintainable weight loss. A global intervention strategy is required for morbid obesity, including the implementation of preventative measures.
