Authors' objectives:
To determine whether there is any evidence for the efficacy and/or effectiveness of creatine in treating patients with concussions.
Authors' results and conclusions:
Two-hundred and nine published studies were identified in our search. Upon examination on the titles and abstracts of these two-hundred and nine studies, fifteen studies were thought to be relevant and were retrieved in full for further appraisal. At present, there is no data to support the efficacy and/or effectiveness of creatine supplement to treat mild traumatic brain injury/concussive patients. At present, there are two randomized controlled trial protocols investigating the efficacy and/or effectiveness of creatine supplement in treating patients with persistent postconcussive symptoms. However, these studies have not recruited any participants.
Authors' methods:
A comprehensive and systematic literature search was conducted on May 30, 2023. The search was done on commercial medical literature databases with no limitation, such as on the language and year of publication, was implemented in this search. With regard to expert and/or systematic review articles that were identified in our literature search, instead of appraising and summarizing these articles, we decided to trace and retrieve the relevant primary studies included in these review articles. These manually retrieved primary studies were then appraised and summarized when appropriate. We also manually searched the references of all the articles that we retrieved in full for further potentially relevant primary studies.
